What I read LAST: “The Hour I First Believed” by Wally Lamb [fiction]. This book was really good and reminiscent of Wally Lamb’s other book “I Know This Much Is True” in tone and breadth of story. “The Hour I First Believed” follows Caelum Quirk, a high school english teacher at Columbine High School. I was only 10 when the deadly shooting occurred at Columbine High School in 1999 and I was fascinated to read Lamb’s account. His main character is fictional, but he uses the real names of the victims and shooters. Those chapters were heavy and teary for me, but Lamb continues the story beyond Columbine and how it effects Quirk’s life afterword. Really good read, heavy and intriguing.
What I’m reading right NOW: “I’m Judging You” by Luvvie Ajayi [non-fiction, essays]. After the heaviness of the Wally Lamb novel I have turned to something lighter! I discovered Luvvie when I heard her on Jen Hatmaker’s podcast and thought she was funny and smart. I started following her on Instagram and now am finally reading her book. Its hilarious! She lays out an array of ways us humans need to “do better” and she is spot on. She balances both humor and seriousness well and discusses important things we should be doing better. What I’m reading NEXT: I don’t know yet! I might re-visit some classics or dive into poetry for a little while. Probably need to throw in some more middle grade books too!
